Greenwich.
The ceiling of the Painted Hall Portico
As you may, or may not, know I am undertaking my PhD research at the University of Greenwich, based in South East London. I’ve written a little about the university before in my first blog here, but today I thought I’d show the surrounding area off a little as well as showing off a bit more of the campus. I don’t often visit campus, but I recently went for a in-person walking supervision, and thought it would be a good chance to take some photos. Of course, the afternoon was a bit more of a whirlwind than I expected and I forgot to take as many photos as I wanted - but that means I have a good excuse to write another blog about Greenwich soon. So here is a quick tour through a visit to Greenwich for a PhD supervision to try and get you to visit if you haven’t before…
My first stop in Greenwich is always the area by the Gypsy Moth pub (somewhere I’d recommend). Here, you have the Cutty Sark, a nineteenth century clipper; an international street food market (Friday - Sunday) which always smells delicious; and the Greenwich foot tunnel which if you fancy it, takes you under the Thames and over the Isle of Dogs. It’s a lovely area to grab some food, and do a little sightseeing.
After a quick wander around, particularly to grab some cannoli for my supervision, I went to the Greenwich Meantime Old Brewery, which is based right on campus, for some lunch. The food here is wonderful (I had a tomato gnocchi, my husband had a burger and chips), and we ate in the walled garden, surrounded by roses and trees. The brewery is a delight, has a tasting room, a garden, and an inside dining area where you can see all of the old machinery. I’ve previously enjoyed one or two cocktails there, so if it’s a nice sunny day and you’re looking for food or drink - I’d recommend there.
After we finished our meal it was time for me to go and meet my supervisor which, luckily for me, meant I not only got to wander through the wonderful architecture that is Greenwich’s campus, but I also got to spot national treasure, Dame Judi Dench recording a documentary. The campus is used for a wide variety of filming and if you pay close attention you can often spot the campus in the background of a show or fim - in fact over breakfast before heading in for my supervision I was watching the latest episode of Who Do You Think You Are, with Ross Kemp, as he visited to learn about an ancestor of his that had been at the site when it was the Naval Hospital.
We then walked out of campus past the Trafalgar Tavern (another pub I’d recommend), past Trinity Hospital (which I forgot to take a photo of), past the power station until we found some seating next to the river, outside the pub the Cutty Sark (dating from 1695) (which I again forgot to take a photo of, but will probably feature in my next blog on the area).
After I finished up my supervision we walked back into campus and I headed straight to Greenwich Market to get some cake, cheese, and beer before going home, to recover from a lovely afternoon (albeit one that got me out of the house in a way I’m not so used to these days!).
So that was my afternoon in and around the University of Greenwich campus going to a face-to-face supervision. There are many more sites to show, so there will definitely be future blogs on the area to encourage people to take a trip and check it out.
